In the Spring of 2017, I participated in the course ENVIR480, Susainability Studio. This was a sustainability course focused on waste and sustainability. Throughout the quarter, student teams would work with an entity or organization on a sustainability and waste-related project. My team worked with the University of Washington Housing and Food Services (HFS) to help them prepare for and develop strategy for their upcoming plans to expand their composting program in the UW residential halls.
My specific portion of the project was focused on developing and analyzing the results of survey asking UW residence hall students about their experiences with and opinions regarding composting. This was a challenge and learning experience for me as I had never created a survey meant for such a large scale or one which was being used by an outside entity. The data analysis was particularly difficult and exhaustive, but ultimately rewarding and I improved my data analysis and Excel proficiency in the process.
The survey was open between May 7 - May 16, 2017 (approx. 10 days) and received 886 responses. Below are some charts summarizing the results of some of the survey questions.
